The in-step of a boot is a key fit area. The in-step area should fit snug, not too loose, and not too tight on the foot.
It is normal for your foot to slip a little in the heel area when trying on a new boot. If the heel of your boot is too tight, the instep may also be too tight. A tight heel could indicate that the boot is too short. When the foot is positioned too close to the toe of the boot, the toes can be constrained in the boot.
The ball area of your foot should be positioned evenly with the widest part of the boot for the best fit.
Lane Boots are offered in a variety of boot shapes, toe shapes and heel shapes. The wider the toe area is, the more relaxed the toes will be. The higher the heel of the boot, the tighter the instep may be.

I am a true size 8 in every shoe, and I often go up to 8.5 when it comes to boots with no zipper. I received my 8.5s and could not even get my foot down past the ankle of the right boot. The left boot fit but I had some panic when I could barely get it off (needed my boyfriend to pull hard). I started an exchange for a 9. The exchange process was the easiest I’ve ever experienced so I was really impressed with that. The boots are beautiful, btw. The craftsmanship is impeccable. So my 9s arrived today. The left one goes on and comes off just fine. The right one is a little struggle on and off but it fits. Once they are on, they are definitely bigger than what I’d prefer with lots of foot slippage. I’m on the fence about keeping them because for the cost, I’d like them to fit better and easier. I’ve looked at the Plain Janes as an alternative because the reviews suggest they fit a bit differently. I want to keep the boots, but I’m definitely unsure if it’s worth it because of the fit issues. It’s a tough call because they are absolutely gorgeous.

I absolutely loved these right out of the box. They fit perfect. Because they are a snip toe I went up 1/2 size from my regular shoe size. I have a wider toe box. Perfect!
